What is search engine submission and why is it important?

Submission is the process of telling the search engines who you are, what you do, and what you want to be found under by people doing searches on a search engine.

Submission lets a search engine know that you want their robots to visit your site and go through the text, keywords, and pictures and decide whether the robot wants to add your site to it's listings.
